Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa are Inspected
by Princess Margriet

OTTAWA, May 2005 - The Regiment provided a guard of honour at the National War Memorial for Princess Margriet of the Netherlands on Saturday 14 May. Princess MargrietHRH Princess Margriet was born in Ottawa during the Second World War and an area of the Civic Hospital was declared Dutch soil so that she would be born in her country.

LCol A.F.B.(Bud) Walsh, Commanding Officer, led the Regiment's 88 soldiers on parade, dressed in the 'new' Canadian pattern combats in Full Fighting Order. The Sentries were dressed in scarlets and the Pipes and Drums were resplendent in full ceremonial dress. The sentries, under the leadership of Sgt. A.J. Bergsma, were outstanding in their role, an honour they had also performed at the opening of the Canadian War Museum the weekend prior.

The parade was followed by a private reception at Cartier Square Drill Hall, Princess Margriet Paradehosted by The Royal Netherlands Embassy.

Accompanying Princess Margriet and the official party on the inspection were Honorary Colonel John J. Urie and Sgt Howard Bailey, MM. Col Urie was a Platoon Commander,wounded at D+17 and Howard Bailey was his platoon sergeant, who fought through the D-Day Campaign on helped drive the enemy from the polders of Holland. Also attending the ceremony in tunic, kilt and medal was our Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Jackie Holzman and City clerk Pierre Pagé.

Princess Margriet ParadeAfter the official reception was finished, the Regiment presented the first Canadian flag to be flown over the new Canadian War Museum to the Regimental museum. This was presented to Sgt Bergsma by the CWM, for the Regiment.
